Week Commencing: Sat 21/10/2023

Well that time of year soon fly’s round and this week we welcomed the Vikings for their annual Gigantica smash up. With autumn in full swing with big winds and cold nights coming our way it was a very interesting week, take a read to see how they got on.

Well this week I’m starting the week off with Mr big ‘Anders Frank’. Choosing to fish new spots he found amongst the weed patches within his swim in Co’s Point, his 1st rod was positioned just 14 wraps towards the left side off the old tits then his middle rod widely spread across at 28 wraps to the right side off the old tits, then the 3rd rod was way across to the flat oak on the swims limits at 31 wraps. The week started off really well for Anders getting off the mark in the opening night with 3 fish, he continued this form and caught  fish  on the the 1st 4 nights off the week, then came the roller coaster off weather that was up and down with sunny and rainy intervals with plummeting temperatures off a night time that I would say killed the fishing, having said that he manged to end the week on a staggering 12 fish. Anders started the week with 2kg of his 24mm boilies on each spot then topping each spot up after every bite with 10 spombs off only boilie that was a nut blend flavour from DT baits, simple as you like KD rigs with match the hatch bottom baits to what he was feeding. It just goes to show you don’t have to be fancy this time off year to slip up these carp, 40kg off boilie Used only throughout the week for Anders and just to mention he manged to land the mega looking scaly ‘Equalled’ at 50lb and then ‘La Boheme’ at 52lb 9oz.

Next hauler for the week was veteran Martin fishing from stink a swim that has done the Dains really well in the 15years they’ve been visiting Gigantica. 26.5 wraps  towards the right side off Baxter’s was the more productive spot for martin with his next spot being the same range but directly at beach in slightly harder ground. Yet again KD rigs and this time a balanced bottom bait for martin match the hatch style to his DT baits nut blend he was feeding. Martins week drawn to an end with 7 bites and 7 landed with his biggest victim being ‘The Koi’ at a mega new top weight 60lb 6oz. same tactics as Anders with the baiting starting out with 2kg of boilie on each spot then 10 spombs after each bite.

Per manged to keep Alcatraz on form for the 2nd week running. Choosing to fish short at just 22 wraps aiming for big southerly on a very precise hard spot just 2 metres away from a large weed was the hot spot for Per this week, with 5 fish falling from the spot and then his 2nd spot was further right off the scary tree at 29 wraps it was only the one fish from this spot. Per was very accurate when positioning his roads really close to weed beds, yet again it’s the Danish way with bog standard rigs, a simple braided D-rig with a kurve shank hook, and off course out the bag 22mm boilie on the hair with a little piece off cork just to give a balanced approach, the whole group using DT baits nut blend boilies. 6 fish for per for the week with his better fish being ‘Terminator’ at a new top weight off 55lb 4oz.

Next up with have the smiler off the group Peter fishing from Pole position. Taking plenty of time with the grappling lead on Saturday afternoon once getting in his swim finding new spots that previous anglers hadn’t fished he settled on 3 spots in a wide spread  from long towards stink at 29 wraps then between stink and Alamo at 26 wraps then the final spot was short just 16 wraps at Alamo. All 3 spots produced fish up to 46lb, choosing to fish on the edge off the weed, this shown that the fish are loving it in the weed beds. Peter used simple rigs with match the hatch balanced bottom baits, he used 40kg of DT nut blend throughout the week and same baiting as the other guys 15 spomb after each fish.

Next up we have Tommie, he started out the week in Scotties corner before after only 2 nights there he upped sticks an moved into oblivion. Choosing to go out long to where the fish have been showing at 30 wraps to the margin between Beach and Baxter’s to a nice hard spot yet again on the edge off the weed. 2 fish for his 4 nights in this swim came in the afternoon off Wednesday and Thursday, Tommie went with different rigs compared to the other lads using the Korda Loops & Booms presentation with balanced wafters to his DT baits 22mm boilies he was feeding. Biggest fish for Tommie was a new 50lb for the main lake called ‘Roblox’ at 52lb and ounces, to think this carp was stockie into the main lake in 2017 and has gain 41lb in 6 years is crazy!, Tommie went through 40kg of boilie for the week.

Mikkel and Thomas doubled in Alamo this week for a good social. Mikkel taking the left side fishing the short rod towards the club house and then Thomas went for 28 wraps to the left side off the beach. With the weather beating them up pretty bad in terms of the wind thrashing in there, it did make the fishing difficult at times, Mikkel on the other hand manage just 2 fish to 45lb for his efforts falling to match the hatch pop ups on hinge stiff rigs fished over a bed of 22mm DT baits nut blend. Sadly there was no fish  for Thomas despite giving it his best efforts on a rather challenging week when the weather was certainly not on their side.

Last but not least I’m going to end the week with Peder a long time serving friend to Gigantica and especially Korda. Peder made his 1st trip to G a long time back in 2009 and has been visiting the venue every year since, coming out mid-way in the draw and the wind hacking into Big Southerly that’s where he set his stall out for the week. Peder found new hard spots within his swim, he fished 3 different spots up to 25 wraps left off Alcatraz using the same approach as the others guys, 2 fish for the week up to 32lbs, yet again the DT baits with bottom bait rigs match the hatch wafters.

This week I can honestly say I seen the lake get fished in a total opposite way to what I’ve seen all year, just a simple as you like boilie approach using really basic rigs, it really does show that you don’t need to over complicate your fishing. It was good to see the how much confidence the Dains have in there bait/rigs and off course there approach to just fish boilie only, the lads ended the week on 37 fish in total so it was a really good week to say the least.

But for now all the best and I’ll look forward to seeing you all again.
